Hand on Heart

Gather your notebook (or a piece of paper) and a pen. Find a comfortable place on a sofa, a chair at your desk, or on a cushion on the floor.

Make sure that the location is relatively quiet and free from interruption. See that your back is supported, or at ease and that you are sitting upright. You may cross your legs if you wish or sit with your feet planted firmly on the floor.

Take a few moments to sense the inflow and outflow of breath. Allow your awareness to follow the breath as it expands your lungs and abdomen and exits through your nose. With each breath begin to let go a bit more, releasing any tension or pain in your neck and shoulders, your arms, back, hips, and legs. Sense the inflow of the breath as it fills your lungs, and then sense the outflow as you slowly let go and begin to relax.

Feel deeper. Think higher.jpg

Take a hand and place it on your heart. Feel the warmth generated by having your hand there. You may even sense your heart beating. Now pick up your pen and write from that place. As you’re writing, focus on the warm spot where you have your hand. Write whatever comes to you. Whatever words, fragments, ideas, or impressions surface. Just write them down and keep going. Write for 10 minutes, then stop and put down the pen.

Take time over your week to check back in with this area of your body. What sadness, grief, and longing are happening in this spot that need releasing? Take some time to listen to what it has to say. Use this time to grow ideas for stories or another creative activity. Maybe a drawing or chocolate cake. There's no pressure, of course, to do any of this, the most important thing is to show up. And listen.
